Fisher Gold Bug 2 Gold Prospecting Detector
A small and lightweight gold prospecting metal detector. Excellent sensitivity and ground balance.
I’ve been using the Fisher Gold Bug 2 for many years now in addition to my Minelab GP Extreme. Both detectors serve different purposes however both perform equally well in their areas of use. Over the years I’ve found thousands of gold nuggets in Arizona, Nevada and California and can say with a certainty my experiences have led me to believe that 70% of all these nuggets could have been found with either the GP Extreme or Gold Bug 2 (GB2). That is a very high percentage.
So what you ask about the other 30 percent? That’s a great question. Some of the larger nuggets (up to several ounces in size) could have not been found by the Gold Bug 2 as they were deep in extremely mineralized ground. No matter how much I wish it was true the Gold Bug 2 (with any coil) just does not have the detecting depth ability to hear a 2 ounce gold nugget at 26 inches deep. The Minelab GP Extreme does with a wide variety of coils. On the other hand the GP Extreme (with any coil) cannot locate those tiny, tiny pieces of gold like the Gold Bug 2 can. Now don’t let the 30 percent bias you against the Gold Bug 2. Look at the picture at the top left. That’s a beautiful 5.5 gram gold nugget the GB2 found. And remember the vast majority of gold is smaller gold, not multi-ounce nuggets.
I have often left the Minelab at home and just hunted with the GB2 because its a lighter unit and mot importantly a very capable one. Keep in mind these 2 gold machines use very different technology and batteries. The Minelab is a pulse induction gold detector and the Fisher is a very low frequency detector. The GB2 uses two 9 volt batteries while the GP Extreme uses camcorder batteries. Anyway, just some thoughts on a hot Arizona Sunday afternoon. Would love to hear any comments or questions you might have. Just scroll down a little and share your thoughts.
