Detecting Gold Nugget Patches
Detecting For Nugget Patches
The old saying rings true. You don’t know what you’ll find unless you look. Some time ago a good friend and I decided to once again visit a new area in hopes that we would find some virgin or forgotten gold ground detecting.
As most days do this one started early. Luckily I did not have to do much except wake up, shower, brew a quick cup of coffee, strap my Glock 45 and camera on, grab my back pack and head out the door. It was 4 AM. The truck was pre-loaded the day before with my Minelab, Gold Bug 2, quad, food, water, gas, etc. A quick turn of the key and off I went to meet my friend just outside of Congress, AZ. From there we wold convoy to our final destination of Kingman, AZ. We made a stop or two to shake hands with the governor (restroom breaks) and get some fresh coffee in Wikiup, AZ. There is gold for those who wish to explore the Wikiup area (as well as Congress) but neither places were our destination.
Once we arrived on site, we unloaded our quads, geared up and hit the dusty trail. Our goal was to cover a predetermined route staying open to possibility with our detecting. We stopped at the farthest point which was over an hour of riding and decided to work our way back. During our trek one of the washes we passed by hand some very interesting looking geology. We decided to park, gear up, start detecting and see what was to be here. After about a 30 minute hike we fired up the detectors. Right off the bat we began detecting old bullets, boot tacks and bits of wire. Sound familiar?
We knew others had not yet exhaustively worked this wash and people were here for some reason, at some time in the distant past. After an hour or so of detecting we found an old cabin and then to our delight old hand stacking. Someone was gold prospecting in this area. Were the prospectors the same people who built the cabin? Maybe.
We kept on exploring and slowly and methodically detecting the washes and tributaries our exploration revealed for many hours. Did we find gold? We did and spent the day filling our pokes as much as we could. Detectable gold is not everywhere so when you find it, take all you can while you. Open the door when opportunity knocks.
