Delorme InReach Explorer
No one ever wants to see a fun gold prospecting trip turn bad and get hurt in the gold fields. But we do have options to help rescue us or those with us in times of need. You might recall this article I published back in Jan. of 2011. It stemmed from comments made by Walt and “63bkpkr” on this thread from the old Gold Prospecting Forum.
In 2011 I purchased a Spot GPS and it has served me well. Great service, good prices. But I always wanted more as far as messaging goes and did not want to yet leap to a satellite phone. Let me also reiterate that Spot is a great company, not one single complaint here. In fact my unit with them is still active and I plan to keep it as such.
After much review I decided to purchased a Delorme InReach Explorer as my next option this fall. What I truly like about the Delorme InReach Explorer is the fact that I can send text messages from the unit to anyone and still have the GEOS Rescue Benefit with their plans. Not only does the Delorme InReach Explorer send text messages it can also receive them. And that’s not only huge in emergencies its also great for just keeping in touch with the wife, etc. or updating friends on gold hunting locations and plans.
The Delorme InReach Explorer can also pair with your cell phone to send messages but does not need the cell to do this, nor does it need any cell or internet service. The picture here shows both messages sent to my friend Las while another friend (Dennis) and I were camped out at a gold prospecting location recently from the Delorme InReach Explorer unit itself and also with my cell phone pained with it. Personally I prefer the keyboard options my cell provides over the built in keyboard on the unit. There are no hints in the messages as to where we were gold prospecting just a request for some elk steaks and location check in.
Where this unit shined for me was that I could text my family from the most remote areas with no cell or internet access and the messages were sent and received just as fast as if I were in town. It gets better, the recipient also receives your GPS coordinates with a Google Maps link. This unit does a lot more, so if you’re looking for a remote country communicator I encourage you to check out both the Spot and Delorme offerings. Both are worthy of your hard earned dollar.
